The consequences of unsafe gas work can be devastating for the individuals involved. The cases can vary from carbon monoxide exposure resulting in brain damage and paralysis. This could be the cause of an incorrectly fitted or badly repaired gas appliance. Most of these incidents can be avoided if the necessary safety measures are put into place.

Gas Safe Register

The main purpose behind this register is to ensure that the public stays protected from unsafe gas work, and therefore any reports of faulty appliances or repairs which threaten gas safety will be taken very seriously.

Any firm that becomes registered under the Gas Safety register is agreeing to take gas safety very seriously, and as part of the rules of registration, they are ultimately responsible for solving any faults reported by a customer. As most businesses are keen on maintaining their reputation, they will act quickly in rectifying the situation should a customer complain. If they do not do so, they can face some harsh consequences. They could face suspension of their registration or even complete removal from the Register.

Some businesses may feel they are being treated unfairly as they show great dedication and honesty in their work. They are usually involved in investing time, and training into their registration, therefore they may wronged when it comes to complaints from customers.

However, the Gas Safe Register has to ensure that the public safety come first, and anything less than high level standards of gas work will be unacceptable. Nonetheless, the Gas Safe Register makes an effort to keep a balance between protecting the customer and treating the registered engineers appropriately.

In quite a lot of cases the complaints are unfounded. Open communication between the customer and the business is key in the customer being able to notify the business if they are not happy with the gas work.

Striking the right balance

The Gas Safe Register strives for ensuring that the businesses are not mistreated and that the public's complaints are taken seriously. In order to maintain the balance, during the investigation the Gas Safe Register keeps the business involved in two ways. Firstly, it allows the business an opportunity to put things right. Secondly, the business has the opportunity to learn from the mistake to avoid future mishaps , and also maintain good customer relations.

If it is found that the work carried out was done by someone who is not registered or competent, this will call for immediate inspection and the information will be passed on to the Health and Safety Executive.

As part of the safety process, once the defect notice is issued, the business is responsible for competing the rectification work within the time-scale specified by the Gas Safety Register. If it so happens that the business cannot carry out the remedial work, it should make arrangements with the customer for another registered business to do it.
